I think you're making a bigger deal out of this than what is actually going to happen.
Sure there are going to be some guys that are retained on short term deals. The incentive to sign guys long term is 1. Contract certainty and 2. With very limited rfas, teams are gonna want to lock up players when they can and not continously tie up a tag on one player and miss out on the opportunity to retain other players.

If they go less than 30 i dont mind locking them up long term depends who and what age , but if its a lot i will go year to year basis simple , u cant lock up every high $ contract longterm

Yes but we don't encourage anyone to sign players of any age that are top 100 to a long term deal which would actually be a dynasty format. I thought the Cruz beltre cargo - add in jose ramirez now - will never get a long term deal like a real team would have to provide Ow and Trust me if i was in here 2016 , hands down u wud never had Ramirez cuz i wud have locked him up for four years Cheaply and would not have to go year to year now , so Stop crying about Ramirez

I was screwed by this vote as I did the correa deal Bc i was planning to win bumgarner next year if healthy and jose after clearing hanley and murphy cap

Pretty much everyone's plans have to change at least somewhat because of this, you aren't the only one. This needed to happen so just adjust to it

And I traded for Walker and Nelson in part because they had rfa status next year. Well not anymore. I had 8 rfas next year and I can now control 3 of them. You don't hear me crying. Besides letting guys go and planning on winning them the following year is ludicrous. The only way to ensure having a player is to never let them go.
Maybe next time you should participate in the discussions and not wait until after the fact to voice your discontent.

Let's talk about the main issue I'm raising.
There are going to be more 1 year deals Bc the RFA incentives are gone. This means more Nelson Cruz, cargo, beltre guys.

Why are there going to be more one year deals exactly?

With or without rfa you are going to lock someone up if you want them. Not being able to resign someone with a discount 3-4 years in the future isn't going to change that

With very limited rfas, teams are gonna want to lock up players when they can and not continously tie up a tag on one player and miss out on the opportunity to retain other players. I think Mike makes a good point here. We all have guys with a range of contracts - rookie deals, MLB deals that range from 2018 to 2021. If you keep giving 4 year deals to guys that you tag, then you can carry 8 guys with the "RFA discount." If you do lots of 1 or 2 year deals, you limit the total savings you can get. Now are guys like Beltre or Cruz going to be signed to 4 year deals? No. But if you have a year where you are light on free agents, you could consider them. For a specific example, Landon has a pretty loaded 2019 free agent class - Lamb, Lindor, Schwarber, Lorenzo Cain, Sale, Porcello, and Kimbrel are all free agents. Now, maybe Lindor gets a rookie extension and Sale is worth a max contract...but that seems like a lot of talent that he would be interested in retaining. If he is signing guys after this coming season (so post-2018), isn't he incentivized to go 2020 or longer for anyone of much potential? Now, it could have easily been the case that he had a bunch of 2020 free agents, so 1-year deals would make sense, but this seems like the sort of thing that will kind of balance out.

ok if thats what you all think will happen. I just know there is now less incentive for long term deals.

I guess for the max contract option, we did stipulate at least two years. I guess we could discuss making it so you have to have at least a two year contract to be able to use a RFA tag on a player? If we are worried about increasing the number of shorter deals, that would decrease that risk.

If RFAs being retained on one year deals does become an issue we can discussed this further. To get back on topic. From the people that replied it seemed that option 2 and option 3 were the preferred choices for handling the RFA designation. If no one else has anything to add, I can get a poll posted and let you guys vote between those 2 choices.
