To make the playoffs, some things have to go your way. To win a championship, everything has to go your way.
The 2013 Cubs were the epitome of that.
Where would you like to start?
How about the division having the worst record in league history due to injuries decimating opponent's rosters? Or what about every first round pick getting an actual shot to contribute in cubs playoff run?
Props to Cubs. He managed to get a re-draft win in a a dynasty league! Hey a win is a win, and 1 more than I have. I'm just skeptical that the resources are there to help him repeat.
Here are the actual contributing stats from anyone with significant ABs that counted for his squad.
He managed this squad very well along with break outs from most of these players. I think the only one with a year similar to what was is expected game from Goldschmidt and Cespedes. I'm guessing most of these stats from Carpenter, Gyorko, Cozart and Lowrie came from 2b, SS and 3B. Average them out and they are OUTSTANDING for those positions. In true Theo Epstein fashion, build an infield, buy and outfield! I'm a doubter Lowrie can remain healthy and the batting averages from all 4 will probably drop for 2014. This was a key to his win.
Now for pitching. Just look at the size of this graphic and it isn't every one. He got contributions the "Cardinal Way" by more than one meaning!
The stats from Colon, Bucholz, Wacha, Kelly, Gonzalez are thanks to his in season adjustments and they paid off.
Like I said, to win, things have to go your way!
Organization Projection:
2013 was a result of the other team in the division being deprived of talent due to the demand to perform year after year. Braves and Cardinals have dealt of their depth for vets and it showed this year as injuries decimated seasons. Cubs was the complete opposite of that and thrived off his minor league system and their contributions. I'm sure the sacrifices of Baez, Bogaerts, Berrios, will be felt sooner rather than later.
