Here are the rookie buyouts that are available for this upcoming season: (to review this rule if you have a guy highlighted on the spread sheet you can buy him out for this price, lose the next year and must give him a new contract at this price. You must own him from last season.)

So are you saying that if a team was to trade for a player w a 2013 expiring contract that the team that trades for him could not extend the player before the FA period starts? If so, I don't think that was ever brought up or specified when this rule was proposed and being discussed.

Expos has elected to buyout Matt Weiters final rookie year and extend him through 2017 at the rate of $20.3.
