Draft Grades – This isn’t based off of volume of picks or what your system needs, but off of the quality pick that was made with what was available.
Braves –B+ : It’s hard to miss when you have #1 and #4, and this guy did well beyond that as well. Most of these names are pretty familiar. I’m surpised Peacock lasted to #40 after his late season debut in 2011.
#1 - Braves - Anthony Rendon - 2B/3B – Nationals
#4 - Braves - Danny Hultzen - SP – Mariners
#35 - Braves - Matt Barnes - P - Red Sox
#40 - Braves - Brad Peacock - P – Athletics
#61 - Braves - Blake Swihart - C - Red Sox
#63 - Braves - Cody Buckel - P - Rangers
Royals – B+: This based on how early Alfaro went. With another average pick it would have been an A-. Alfaro is an under the radar guy. Royals could have traded down and netted something else. All the other picks are solid in my opinion. This guy had the best system coming in to the draft and didn’t need 6 picks to add impact. They are both young but this guy is rebuilding. Norris has ace potential while Lindor has 15-20 hr potential at SS. He will do the trick in Kirby, but neither of these guys will matter for 3 years or so.
#2 - Royals - Gerrit Cole - SP – Pirates
#18 - Royals - Francisco Lindor -SS – Indians
#44 - Royals - Daniel Norris - P - Blue Jays
#34 - Royals - Eddie Rosario - 2B - Twins
#65 - Royals - Jorge Alfaro - C – Rangers
#66 - Royals - Justin Nicolino - P - Blue Jays
Rays – C : Rays did well with Bauer here but Baez is so far off which leaves him open to bust potential. Wong should be a solid regular but I don’t see him being a huge fantasy contributor. Gilmartin will probably be better than smyly, but don’t be fooled by their numbers in the low minors.
#3 - Rays - Trevor Bauer - SP – Diamondbacks
#19 - Rays - Javier Baez - 3B – Cubs
#22 - Rays - Kolten Wong - 2B – Cardinals
#25 - Rays - Sean Gilmartin - P – Braves
#32 - Rays - Drew Smyly - P – Tigers
#78 - Rays - Andrew Susac - C – Giants
#96 - Rays - Dan Vogelbach - 1B - ChC
Expos – B- : After a couple solid and high upside picks in Bubba and Howard, it’s hard to see the fantasy contributors here. Maybe Maronde will continue his ascension through the minors. Eovaldi threw well last fall but that is apparently all he does and may be bound for the pen.
#5 - Expos - Bubba Starling - OF – Royals
#21 - Expos - Dillon Howard - P – Indians
#37 - Expos - Joe Panik - SS – Giants
#69 - Expos - Nick Maronde - P – Angels
#85 - Expos - Nathan Eovaldi P – Dodgers
#89 - Expos - Ivan DeJesus - SS – Dodgers
#93 - Expos - Jed Bradley - P - Brewers
Red sox – B: A couple of these guys look like they could be fantasy contributors, but the all star potential you look for in the first couple rounds just isn’t there outside of Bundy. I think Spangenberg will be a good regular for the padres but I’m not sure about for fantasy purposes as he doesn’t steal or hit for power.
#6 - Red Sox - Dylan Bundy - SP – Orioles
#12 - Red Sox - Christian Yelich - OF - Marlins
#16 - Red Sox - Taylor Jungmann - P – Brewers
#20 - Red Sox - Wil Middlebrooks - 3B - Red Sox
#36 - Red Sox - Jonathan Schoop - SS – Orioles
#47 - Red Sox - Wily Peralta - P - Brewers
#48 - Red Sox - Cory Spangenberg - 2B – Padres
#68 - Red Sox - Robbie Grossman - OF - Pirates
Indians B- :An Interesting strategy here, relief pitchers first and then HS guys, then more relief pitchers. We will see if Odor pans out as he is hyped. Brothers could be a big time closer possibly and Rosenthal is special as well for where he got him. Domingo might help be in Houston in say 2017.
#7 - Indians - Addison Reed - RP - White Sox
#27 - Indians - Jose Campos - P - Yankees
#28 - Indians - Taylor Guerrieri - P - Rays
#29 - Indians - Dante Bichette Jr - 3B - Yankees
#30 - Indians - Christian Bethancourt - C - Braves
#50 - Indians - Brandon Nimmo - OF Mets
#53 - Indians - Rex Brothers - P – Rockies
#76 - Indians - Rougned Odor - 2B – Rangers
#81 - Indians - Trevor Rosenthal - P - Cardinals
#82 - Indians - Domingo Santana - OF – Astros
#86 - Indians - David Perez - P – Rangers
#88 - Indians - Drew Vettleson - OF – Rays
#94 - Indians - Allen Webster - P - Dodgers
Marlins - B :Some would say this is too early for Xander but the guy has as much upside as anyone in the minors with the potential that you may never be able to acquire this guy without paying through the nose this may be the cheapest you could ever get him. Springer is solid at 24, then there is a lot of potential for greatness or implosiveness. I hope the Reds do better with Stephenson than they did with Bailey. Another class that won’t contribute until 2017 or so.
#8 - Marlins - Xander Bogaerts - SS/3B - Red Sox
#24 - Marlins - George Springer - OF – Astros
#56 - Marlins - Elier Hernandez – Royals
#67 - Marlins - Ronald Guzman - OF – TEX
#71 - Marlins - Robert Stephenson - P - Reds
#72 - Marlins - Sonny Gray - P - OAK
Astros –B- : Most guys would say that was way too early for Cheslor and I agree. Bradley has Ace potential but there are a lot of “ifs” and “maybes” following him.
#9 - Astros - Cheslor Cuthbert - 3B – Royals
#13 - Astros - Archie Bradley - SP – Diamondbacks
#17 - Astros - James Paxton - SP – Mariners
#33 - Astros - Rhymer Liriano - OF - Padres
#49 - Astros - Mikie Mahtook - OF – Rays
#51 - Astros - Tyler Collins - OF Tigers
#73 - Astros - Larry Greene - OF – Phillies
#80 - Astros - Alex Meyer - P - Nationals
Mets – C :I don’t see brown being a first round talent for fantasy purposes. Hutch is a good pitcher, but he has a lot of competition. Jedd is a good player but I’ve seen as many who believe his bat, doubt it. Simmons shouldn’t touch mixed league line ups for fantasy ever unless he breaks out H-ram style.
#10 - Mets - Gary Brown - OF- Giants
#39 - Mets - Drew Hutchinson - P - Blue Jays
#42 - Mets - Jedd Gyorko - 3B – Padres
#58 - Mets - Jesse Biddle - P – Phillies
#70 - Mets - Andrelton Simmons - SS - Braves
Phillies – A: This guy is in my division and almost finished ahead of me, now I see why. He knows his stuff. Martin and wheeler both project as fantasy regulars and Martin should be a CF which makes him more valuable. If Realmuto doesn’t stall out developmentally this guy is an all star. People love Hager’s bat and think he has the skills to stay at SS. Ramirez is a solid pick at 91.
#11 - Phillies - Leonys Martin - OF – Rangers
#43 - Phillies - Tim Wheeler - OF - Rockies
#59 - Phillies - Chad Bettis - P - Rockies
#60 - Phillies - J.T. Realmuto - C – Marlins
#75 - Phillies - Jake Hager - SS – Rays
#91 - Phillies - Neil Ramirez - P - Rangers
Cardinals – B: I’m giving myself a B because I almost can’t believe the bats are as good as I think they are if they fell this far to me. You all can knock Ozuna but the guy is still developing. Please, hit 40 hrs and bat .250. I’m ok with it. Weiland has huge upside and Molina really didn’t break out, he just carried the stats he had in the pen to the starting role. Holmberg has the best change in the minors and K’d at A ball with the like of some elite MLB pitchers. You can’t deny the bat that V-Cat has. Szczur still needs some time in the minors but I’m sure I will be able to deal him to a cubs fan for something nice. Yordano has as much upside as anyone there, and Sanchez will be closing games for the cardinals before his rookie deal is up bc Motte will start giving up walk off shots to the Reds again, and soon.
#14 - Cardinals - Oscar Taveras - OF – Cardinals
#45 - Cardinals - Matt Adams - 1B – Cardinals
#54 - Cardinals - Marcel Ozuna - OF – Marlins
#57 - Cardinals - Joe Weiland - P – Padres
#64 - Cardinals - Nestor Molina - P - White Sox
#74 - Cardinals - Vinnie Catricala A.K.A. V-Cat - 1B – Mariners
#77 - Cardinals - David Holmbergler - P – Diamondbacks
#83 - Cardinals - Yordano Ventura - P – Royals
#90 - Cardinals - Matt Szczur - OF – Cubs
#92 - Cardinals - Eduardo Sanchez - P - Cardinals
Rockies – B+: This could have been higher had it not been for the question marks of Ravel’s health (and the yanks don’t let young guys play), Rutledge was playing below his age (this could be the biggest Homer pick of the draft) and Anderson has years of pro ball to fizzle out. Garin and Noah look to be the best bets to contribute soon at this point but Marisnick and Bell have all star potential. Oh, then there is the red’s starting SS at 95. He must be really good if no one else wanted him.
#15 - Rockies - Jake Marisnick - OF - Blue Jays
#23 - Rockies - Josh Bell - OF – Pirates
#26 - Rockies - Noah Syndergaard - SP - Blue Jays
#31 - Rockies - Garin Cecchini - 3B - Red Sox
#38 - Rockies - Ravel Santana - OF – Yankees
#79 - Rockies - Jacob Anderson - OF - Blue Jays
#84 - Rockies - Josh Rutledge - SS – Rockies
#95 - Rockies - Zack Cozart - SS - Reds
Yankees – B+ : This is generous bc I like both Cron and Story. 2/3 is still below average and failing in some states but it’s really good if you’re at the dish HAHA. I’m not a believer that Mason will ever contribute in fantasy and if he does you’re looking at gardner 2.0. Which I got a pretty good haul from braves for gardner if you remember so maybe that isn’t so bad. (Randall Delgado/gardner for Julio Teheran). Cron will be an impact bat and Story seems to have Tulo upside. A personal favorite of mine.
#41 - Yankees - C.J. Cron - 1B – Angels
#52 - Yankees - Mason Williams - OF - Yankees
#55 - Yankees - Trevor Story - SS - Rockies
Angels – D : I really don’t think you should ever draft 18 year old relief pitchers no matter where they were selected in the actual MLB draft. What were the Marlins thinking? Anderson is a good pick here. I actually drafted him back in 08 before we moved the draft so guys couldn’t get drafted by us before they signed. I’m not sure he is above a 4-5 started though.
#46 - Angels - Jose Fernandez - P - Marlins
#62 - Angels - Tyler Anderson - P – Rockies
Nationals (Formerly Rangers) B : Purke has good upside but definitely has injury concerns of he wouldn’t have been there at #87. All or nothing here. He probably should have drafted Millone though.
#87 - Nationals - Matt Purke - P – Nationals
Cubs -A: Did himself a favor by trading all his picks because he has never been good in the draft.
Braves –B+ : It’s hard to miss when you have #1 and #4, and this guy did well beyond that as well. Most of these names are pretty familiar. I’m surpised Peacock lasted to #40 after his late season debut in 2011.
