The next chapter.
BEST PICKS
(8) Starlin Castro, Cardinals: This was a pretty weak draft overall, and the 1st round especially ended up being a wasteland. Strasburg at #1 and Chapman at #3 have panned out well; props to Cards for picking a good one out of the remaining mess.
(21) Mike Minor, Rangers: At the time, I thought this was maybe an overdraft. Minor had been labeled a #4 SP, albeit with a high floor, he looked like a surefire major leaguer. Shows what I know, he's definitely more than a #4.
(22) Miguel Sano, Mets: Hasn't paid off yet, but this pick looks better and better.
(28) Zack Wheeler, Reds: Turning out much better than the Jacob Turner/Kyle Drabek/Tyler Matzek clusterf*ck of pitchers that went earlier.
(29) Mike Trout, Red Sox: No matter how many years I play fantasy baseball, I will never make a better pick than this. Here's your #1 pick in the redraft. Too bad I traded him thinking he was a future 4-5 WAR player instead of 9-10.
(33) Shelby Miller, Mets: He fell in the actual MLB draft, but it was because of contract demands. Looking back, I'm surprised he fell this far.
(40) Ian Desmond, Mets: Got this as a compensation pick due to a spreadsheet error! Made it pay off.
(42) Wil Myers, Reds: This was back when he was a catcher. Even though that bat would have been awesome in the C spot, this is still pretty, pretty good.
(60) Anthony Rizzo, Mets: He'd jump to the 5-10 range in a redraft. Behind Trout, Strasburg, probably Myers, maybe Castro and Chapman?
(62) Alex Avila, Mets: We're about to start a run of reasonably productive catchers that were drafted late.
(73) Wilin Rosario, Rockies: Here's another one.
(83) Jonathan Lucroy, Phillies: And one more...
I forgot how crazy Mets went in this draft. He had a ton of picks - some great, some so-so, some bad. Here's the haul:
(1) Stephen Strasburg
(15) Jenrry Mejia
(16) Derek Norris - neither Mejia or Norris look great, but they've actually produced more than several guys ahead of them)
(22) Miguel Sano
(31) Dee Gordon
(32) Tony Sanchez - OK, here's a big bust
(33) Shelby Miller
(36) Chris Withrow
(40) Ian Desmond
(46) Ryan Kalish
(50) Jared Mitchell
(52) Kentrail Davis
(56) Noel Arguelles
(60) Anthony Rizzo
(61) Eric Arnett
(62) Alex Avila
So impressive picks include Strasburg, Sano, Shelby Miller, Desmond, Rizzo, and Avila. (Too bad only Sano and Avila are left in his organization.) Mejia, Norris, Gordon, and Kalish contributed bits of value. The others...eh, that's why he drafted in volume.
WORST PICKS
(2) Josh Bell, Orioles: Ouch. .195 with 92 K in 272 AB. Recently signed a contract to play in South Korea I believe.
(5) Jacob Turner, Yankees: Like Gaby Sanchez from 2009, this one really isn't that bad. He looks like a back-end SP for the duration, but look at the rest of the round and it could have been worse.
(6) Kyle Drabek, Phillies: At least Turner hasn't undergone 2 Tommy John surgeries.
(7) Tyler Matzek, Red Sox: Matzek has yet to make it to the majors. Plus stuff, but never figured out how to control it.
(9) Arodys Vizcaino, Tigers: Injury problems here, his minor league performance when healthy was promising.
(10) Donavan Tate, A's: A former #3 overall pick with tools but no idea how to use them. Had substance abuse and legal problems and was AWOL from Spring Training last year. Has yet to make it out of A ball.
(11) Josh Thole, Rangers: Rangers is gone from the league now, but I have no idea what the thought process was here. Nothing in his scouting report or minor league resume suggested anything more than what he became - a passable part-time catcher.
(13) Grant Green, White Sox: Made it to the majors in 2013, but his ceiling has dropped to utility guy.
(14) Hector Rondon, Cardinals: The Batter Ejector!! Did make it to the majors in 2013.
(17) Michael Montgomery, Rockies: Was climbing the prospect charts nicely, then fell apart. Currently a project in the Rays' system, so maybe they can fix him.
(18) Thomas Neal, Cardinals: A 5th OF type.
(19) James Darnell, Cardinals: A couple cups of coffee with the Padres, didn't do much with them.
(25) Casey Crosby, Red Sox: Made 3 starts with a 2.11 WHIP in 2012.
(26) Ryan Strieby, Phillies: I didn't even remember who this guy was. He put up some numbers in the minors, but looked to be old for his level. Never made it to the majors, and played 2013 with the independent Long Island Ducks.
(30) Carlos Torres, Cubs: Had a nice 2009 in the minors, but was old. Got shelled in 2010, then played in Japan in 2011. Came back to the majors in 2012, where he has been slightly less bad this time around.
(32) Tony Sanchez, Mets: Honestly, we were pretty much right on this guy. He was the #4 pick in the MLB draft and we let him get to here. I think the Pirates are really the ones who are wrong.
