To spark a discussion here are my top 10, it was very hard to include pitchers here and evaluate them against hitters but here goes:
1 - Roy Halladay 2 - Josh Hamilton 3 - Albert Pujols 4 - Mariano Rivera 5 - Cliff Lee 6 - Evan Longoria 7 - Robinson Cano 8 - Felix Hernandez 9 - Miguel Cabrera 10 - Tim Lincecum
just missed - Joe Mauer, Chase Utley, Joey Votto, Troy Tulo, Ryan Braun, and CC

I agree Yankees, really impossible to evaluate hitters alongside pitchers. It depends on the criteria too, if I had first pick and my life depending on winning one game, then it would have to be a pitcher wouldnt it? In that case I would agree with Halladay as #1. If I was starting a team from scratch though and could pick any one player to have for a season, I dont know how you cant go with Pujols. The guy might go down as the best ever. He is already a automatic Hall of Famer if he doesnt play another game and he is only what, 30?

yeah that was my issue, when you say the term "best" what is best. If I had to pick the best clutch player in the game, the guy I want with the game on the line give me Mariano, but to start one game, and because I think pitching beats hitting give me Roy. That being said start a team from scratch for one season, Pujols is the man. That being said he plays 1B, whereas Hamilton plays a tough position but gets hurt. I'd love to hear others thoughts.

I'd put Pujols at the top of that list. Yankees, I'm surprised you didn't include Hanley. Given his position, I think he belongs in the top 10. Why did you decide to leave him out?
I also would rank Mariano lower, mainly because I don't think closers pitch enough to have the value of the elite positional players and starting pitchers.

I vote Pujols #1, no mater what the criteria. He is one of the most consistent and dangerous hitters the game has ever seen, and as much as I HATE the Cardinals, I love Pujols. And not only is he the best hitter in baseball, he is a great fielder. Remember, a good 1B saves a LOT of errors from SS and 3B. I know I'm biased, but think back to how much Mark Grace helped the Cubs when he was saving Shawon Dunston and the 3B by committee tons of errors every year. There's a lot to be said for being able to pencil a guy in for 150 games every single year, and to know that every pitcher in baseball fears him.
That being said, Halladay would be a very close 2nd, because as you guys said, if it depends on one game, I may be persuaded to take Halladay.
And closers would be nowhere near my Top 50, by the way. Even though Mariano is the best ever, I'd rather have a starter anyday.
Another guy I would consider for my Top 10 would be Ichiro. 200 hits every year, excellent leadoff hitter, incredible fielder...that's a pretty good combination. I would like a SS to build around, but none of them are really as great now as, say, ARod and Jeter were in their primes, not even Hanley.

Reds, Hanley is one of my top 3 players in the game favorite though his non hustle and defense lapses for me keep him off the list. He was a tough leave off , and yeah the whole Mariano thing is tough but I'll tell you this in a pressure situation I want no one else on the mound.
Dodgers - yeah I'm a Mattingly fan, and now watch Tex day in and day out and 1B can save alot of bad errors. I just give Hamilton the nod for one year because he plays a much tougher position. If it was a career easily Albert but they said best player right now. Halladay to me got the nod strictly because if I had to choose best I think Halladay gets Albert out more times than he gets a hit(obviously) and pitching wins. I of course would rather have a starter also but they asked best in the game, and Mo is the best pitcher, albeit for one inning. I have a hard time aruguing him just was my personal opinion. I think he is the #1 most important player in the sport for the past 10 years and that's saying something. Ichiro was a HARD leave off yeah. He may be #11 for me, big omission there and I love Ichiro.

I think mauer needs to be in the top ten because not only is he one of the top 10 hitters overall his defensive skills even trump his fantastic offensive ability.

What makes me hesitate about Mauer is he hasn't won anything and his defense has been less and less or an asset over the years. But he reminds me alot of Ichiro and should be top 15 or so , every hitter has on my list has made the WS

If you're going to do this list based on value (including current contract status), isn't Longoria clearly the best player here? That's something that, perhaps, should be considered.
Also, it seems false to ask the question of "If I had one game, who would I start?" The whole reason to love baseball is that it avoids this question so much of the time (obviously not all) due to the 162 games played. It's why most pitchers don't crack lists like this. I've argued the pitchers' question out extensively, and (reluctantly) had to conclude that it's correct thinking to skip them, or at least keep them seperate.

Well it was announced tonight ... top 20 ... DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN"T SEEN THE SHOW SPOILLLLLER ALERT !!!
20 - Ryan Zimmerman 19 - CC Sabathia 18 - Kevin Youklis 17 - Carlos Gonzalez 16 - Buster Posey 15 - Joey Votto 14 - Troy Tulowitzki 13 - Hanley Ramirez 12 - Evan Longoria 11 - Mariano Rivera 10 - Josh Hamilton 9 - Ryan Braun 8 - Robinson Cano 7 - Adrian Gonzalez 6 - Tim Lincecum 5 - Felix Hernandez 4 - Miguel Cabrera 3 - Joe Mauer 2 - Roy Halladay 1 - Albert Pujols
Cliff Lee finished in the 30's , Zimmerman beat David Wright by more than 20 spots, and ARod was at 22. Biggest omission for me is Mat Latos. We can have lot's of arguements but figured it's a cool discussion.
Gonzo at 7 is one of the worst selections on the list for me, yes he CAN do amazing things but he hasn't reached these other guys just yet.
I also find it funny that the top 5 guys have just two World Series rings, and just 4 in the top 10 but #11 has more than all them :-)
And I guess I wasn't completely insane like some of you mentioned when I had Rivera as high as I did, finishing 11 and both commentators said he made their top 10, just sayin LOL
